Bro. John Wesley Love, Alpha 1913
(Howard University 1916 Yearbook)
Bro. Love is the youngest biological Brother of Founder Edgar A. Love. Following in the footsteps of his three older Brothers, John W. was initiated into the Fraternity in 1913. While at Howard, Bro. John was a Man among Men. He followed in his Brother's footsteps and served as President of the prestigious Kappa Sigma Debating Club. Addition he was an avid track
star competing on the University team in events ranging from the 100 yard dash to 5 mile run.
Bro. Love received his undergraduate degree in 1916. After serving in WWI achieving the rank of First Lieutenant, Bro. Love went to Howard's law school and received his law degree in 1922. Two of his classmates were Bros. Campbell Johnson (future 18th Grand Basileus, 7th Grand KRS and 4th Editor to the Oracle) and Walter Mazyck (future 8th Grand KRS). They were also his Line Brothers. So close were the three that after graduation they established a law practice together in D.C. for several years. Eventually, he moved to Charleston, West Virginia where his Brother, Julius (Alpha Charter Member) had established a law practice years before. Besides practicing law, Bro. Love served the community in several civic and social capacities including being a selected as a member of the State Board Commission and the Bachelor Benedict Club of Charleston.
Fraternally, Bro. John was selected as Vice Grand Basileus in 1922. On January 5, 1924, Bro. John was elected as our Fraternity's 10th Grand Basileus.
Bro. Love died suddenly of a heart attack on January 5, 1951 at the young age of 56 in Charleston. He never married.
