Association with Howard University

Two weeks ago, Martin Jenkins (5-80-A) asked the Bruhs who were active (i.e., financial) with the Howard University Alumni Association (HUAA). A few Bruhs responded to Martin’s question. I'm assuming that the response is indicative of participation and financial status of the Bruhs at large.

The Founders maintained an ACTIVE association with Howard University well past their graduation. We all know that Professor Coleman taught at Howard until his retirement in 1955. He served on various university committees and appointed positions. Similarly, Bishop Love was President of the Alumni Association of HU School of Religion. Dr. Cooper was active in creating and participating with the Alumni Association in Philadelphia serving as its President in the mid 1930s.

Above is the 20th anniversary reunion picture of Howard University’s Class of 1914 from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences taken in 1934 (which all three of the Founders were part of). Pictured are three of the Founders: Coleman, Cooper and Love (I'll leave it up to you to find them). This illustrates the Founders continued participation in activities of their alma mater well past their graduation date.

A couple things to note. First, get active with the HUAA. If nothing more, become financial. Annual dues are inexpensive ($35) and chapters are in most major cities. You can get financial online by click on the following link: Second, if you've been hiding out from Homecoming, it time to come out of witness protection. Make plans to attend your alma mater’s event this Fall to hang out with the Bruhs and other classmates. You have three opportunities this Fall: September 1 for the Nation’s Classic (Howard v. Morehouse), October 20 for Homecoming (Howard v. Morgan State) and/or December 15 for The Mother Pearl’s 101st Charter Day Celebration (this should be penned in on your calendar).

The Founders didn't retire from HU once they graduated. Neither should you. Support HU!
