Profiles of who we are:
This is Alpha Chapter #2 - 8/10/11
Kappa Sigma Debating Society
(Howard University 1916 Yearbook)
Back in the day, intellect and achievement ruled on the Yard. The big men on campus weren't athletes or Greeks. It was those that promoted intellectual thought and the arts such as glee or acting organizations, literally clubs and debating societies (hence The Great Debaters). In the early to mid 20th century, several debating societies ruled on Howard's campus. However, the most prestigious was the Kappa Sigma Debating Society. Founder Edgar A. Love was past president of this society in 1912. Many Alpha Chapter Brothers were selected as members of this prestigious organization over the years and were leaders within it. The above excerpt is from the 1916 Howard Yearbook that features George E. Hall (Alpha 1914; pictured), Campbell Johnson (Alpha 1916), William Nelson (Alpha 1916) and, president of the society, John Wesley Love (Alpha 1913; pictured). Both Bros. Hall & Love would go on to be Grand Basili of our Fraternity.
