Profiles of who we are:
This is Alpha Chapter #5 - 8/19/11
The Threat on Greekdom in the 1960s
Eddie has illustrated the VITAL importance for us registering and attending The 100th for The Mother Pearl. Regardless of when you were initiated, there are MANY things we can learn about our history and one another that can shape our perspective, provide insight and ultimately refocus and energize our efforts in Omega.
I had no idea that the Bros in '68 went through this. And I venture to say that the majority of Bros on this email didn't know it either. To provide greater context to what Eddie so eloquently wrote, below is an article from the March 15, 1968 edition of The Hilltop entitled "Is Greekdom Dying?" I'm sure that many Bros and future Bros on the yard during this time remember this article (note: below is the article attached as a PDF for better reading. I apologize for the quality of the article. It was copied from microfiche at Moorland-Spingarn).
Our Fraternity has never been good at keeping records or preserving our history. As Brothers entered Omega Chapter, they took that knowledge, records and history with them. Older Brothers need to share the history with younger Bros AND vis-a-versa (contrary to popular belief, by older Bros listening to younger Bros, a greater appreciation and understanding of Omega can be gained).
