Profiles of who we are:
This is Alpha Chapter #7 - 9/3/11
Founder Bro. Frank Coleman
& The Howard University Board of Athletic Control
(taken from The 1931 Bison Yearbook)
Since day one of our founding to today, Alpha Chapter Brothers carry a rich tradition of athletics at Howard. Many Brothers don't know that one of the Founders, Bro. Frank Coleman, was extremely active in sports and athletics. An article from the November 6, 1930 edition of The Hilltop noted that Founder Coleman, while currently serving as head of the Chemistry Dept, was elected Chair of Howard's Board of Athletic Control. This Board regulated all sports, both collegiate and intramural, at Howard. He served on this Board as Chair through the '30s. The equivalent position today that Founder Coleman served back in the day is Athletic Director. Also on the Board was an HU alumni (and Trustee member) Bro. Campbell C. Johnson (Alpha 1916) who would later become our 18th Grand Basileus (more on Bro. Johnson and his significant societal contributions in a future issue).
Founder Bro. Coleman was elected President of another well-known prestigious organization which all of you are aware of and most of you were affiliated with at one point or another. Do you know what it is? Stay tune for future issues for the answer.
